Did you select and import samsara.wordpress.2014-03-02.xml file which is under Dummy data folder?
Also, I found this thread http://wordpress.org/support/topic/missinginvalid-wxr-platformpro

I have included the dummy data of the whole site and slider you can import it into your site.

1. After you created or imported the dummy data, go to “Settings > Reading”, look at the first option, select “the static page”, then select the creative homepage to be the front page.

2. I’m not sure what’s wrong you did before I check your setting, so can you send me your WP login information with private reply?

Finally, I see. You are using Child Theme, but I test the customize feature based child theme, it’s working fine.
If possible, You can tell me your wp login information here with private reply that I can check it by myself.

I still not quite understand, you want the black background color for the header with white link?
Or as my understand, you only want to change the background color of header and link color for the specific post? If so, you can customize it when you edit the post, you will find the page style customized section under the visual editor.
